About Saturn SL

As the model of the well-known and distinguishing Saturn S-Series, Saturn SL was produced by the subsidiary of General Motors Saturn Corporation (Saturn LLC) and sold under its brand Saturn between 1991 and 2002 as a compact vehicle. Originally introduced as the competitor of Chevrolet Cavalier, Ford Focus and Dodge Neon, SL was a different kind of car from a different kind of car company. But after being manufactured for three generations, the production of SL was ended due to poor sales and SL was replaced by the Saturn Ion (ION) along with the whole S-Series.
The second-generation Saturn SL was produced from 1996 to 1999 based on the GM Z platform. It was offered in only one body style, 4-door sedan. And it came in three trim levels: Base SL, SL1 and SL2. Featured a steel spaceframe clothed in dent-resistant plastic body panels, Saturn SL was powered by a 1.9 L single overhead cam inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 100 horsepower and this engine sent power through either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. The more recent SL was introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year. It got new body panels from the belt-line down and rear end redesigned applique on the trunk as well as new orange turn signal-hazard lights indicator. Back then, the SL still got power from the 1.5 L inline 4-cylinder engine mated to the 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.

Saturn SL Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

As a vehicle made of steel, Saturn SL cannot stay away with problems as the accumulation of mileage. And as a qualified driver, for the safety, you need to learn about these common problems on your SL in advance for the sake of occupants' safety:
First, engine failure and cooling system failure are Saturn SL drivers' biggest problems as they could influence each other, and one will deteriorate the other. For experienced SL drivers, in case the worst situation appears, they have some tricks to diagnose and solve them as soon as possible. At first, there will be leaking coolant on the ground or oil gets into coolant and coolant leaks in the fuel; then engine stays at a high operating temperature so that its performance decreases dramatically. It may make some sounds to warn you of abnormality. Then engine runs roughly, misfires, stalls and even gets in trouble with hard starting and inability to start, even it will lose power when acceleration and consume excessive oil. The Check Engine Light and Low Coolant Light will also come on to warn you that the thorough inspection on the SL radiator, water pump, radiator hose, coolant reservoir, thermostat, oxygen sensor, timing belt tensioner, timing chain tensioner, intake manifold gasket, thermostat gasket and water pump gasket is imminent.
Second, issues on suspension, braking, steering and transmission systems are also very tricky to handle for Saturn SL drivers. First of all, suspension and transmission failures will manifest some similar signs such as grinding or clanking noises from underneath the vehicle. But suspension failure also causes excessive vibration, unintentional steering, abnormal tire wear, titling vehicle, which will lead to poor handling, and the SL steering knuckle, wheel bearing, shock absorber, sway bar bushing, coil springs and coil spring insulator. While the transmission failure is often caused by the SL shift cable, transfer case seal and transmission assembly. The braking failure could be attributed to the SL brake dust shields, brake pad, brake disc and brake caliper. And the power steering hose and power steering pump are the culprits of steering failure.
Never underestimate the function of routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts of your Saturn SL. Not only the SL hood latch, door handle, emblem, windshield wiper, wiper blade, fog light, door lock, wheel cover and antenna but also electrical parts such as power window switch and cruise control switch also need routine maintenance.
