About Saturn SC

As an unreplaceable model of the well-known and special Saturn S-Series, Saturn SC was produced by the subsidiary of General Motors Saturn Corporation (Saturn LLC) and sold under its brand Saturn between 1991 and 2002 as a compact car. Originally introduced as the competitor of Mazda 626, Ford Focus and Daewoo Nubira, SC actually only existed for two years since from 1993, it was renamed to SC2. But it did well in racing matches and won several races in the SCCA World Challenge. And after being manufactured for only two years, SC was replaced by SC2.
Saturn SC made its debut in 1991 for the 1992 model year and it was offered in only one body style, 2- and 3-door coupe. Built on a steel spaceframe chassis and clothed in the dent-resistant plastic body panel, SC came only one trim level back then. Equipped with standard alloy wheels, seat belt retractor, climate control, acoustic insulation and optional anti-lock brakes and traction control, Saturn SC was powered by a 1.9 L dual overhead cam inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 124 horsepower and this engine sent power through either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels.

Saturn SC Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

As a model such as Saturn SC, it may be very suitable for family use, but as the accumulation of mileage, some problems still will find it. In order to make sure everyone on your SC could enjoy a pleasant driving trip, you had better know about those common problems first:
First, engine and braking failures on Saturn SC could be thought to be the worst issues that drivers have ever met during driving. Engine failure could break your vehicle down and braking failure will get you in dangers all the time. In general, engine failure will have some symptoms such as ticking, squealing and clanking noises from the engine; engine hesitates to accelerate or stumbles during acceleration; engine misfires, stalls and suffers from starting problems; vehicle has poor fuel economy and illuminated Check Engine Light and Low Coolant Light. All these could be solved by replacing the SC spark plug, engine mount, air filter, rocker arm, oil filter, intake manifold gasket, oil pump, piston ring, rod bearing, drive belt and timing cover gasket. As for braking failure, you could attribute it to the SC brake pad, brake booster, brake disc, and brake caliper.
Second, for Saturn SC drivers, suspension and transmission failures seem to appear together as well. And strangely, these two issues could make odd sounds such as clunking and grinding from underneath the vehicle. The difference lies in the suspension failure also causes poor handling due to intense car vibration while driving, swerving or nose diving when braking, tilting vehicle due to uneven tire wear and loose steering wheel, and all these result from the SC shock absorber, shock and strut mount, coil spring insulator, coil springs, wheel bearing and sway bar link. While the transmission failure is often caused by the SC transmission assembly and shift cable.
In order to enjoy only pleasures brought by your Saturn SC, you need to perform routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts of your Saturn SC. Some auto parts though play important roles in making sure safety and comfort, they are made of fragile materials and work under harsh conditions for a long time. For example, electrical parts are exposed to a high frequency of usage, therefore, maintaining the SC instrument cluster, speedometer, power window switch, spark plug wires, A/C switch, steering angle sensor, blower motor and seat heated switch is essential. Other parts such as seat belt, headlight, emblem, door handle, wheel cover, steering wheel, windshield wiper, wiper blade, fog light and door lock need to be maintained regularly as well considering their important roles in a vehicle.
