About Oldsmobile Regency

Taking a new name for an old concept car, Oldsmobile Regency was produced by an American multinational corporation General Motors Company's brand Oldsmobile between 1997 and 1998 as a full-size car. Originally introduced as a performance model of the tenth-generation Oldsmobile 88 (Eighty-Eight), Regency added to the Oldsmobile's lineup to replace the Oldsmobile 98 (Ninety-Eight). As Oldsmobile's marketing strategy to satisfy traditional Oldsmobile buyers, the last Regency rolled off the assembly line on June 18, 1998.
Oldsmobile Regency made its debut in 1997 as a 1998 model and it was offered in only one body style: a 4-door sedan. Featured the same front fenders and chrome grille as the Ninety-Eight sedan, Regency kept the standard Eighty-Eight body. It was equipped with a long list of standard features including traction control, leather upholstery, dual 6-way power seats with power lumbar and a driver's side memory function, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and an electronic level control for the rear suspension as well as a driver's side electrochromic outside mirror. During its lifetime, Oldsmobile Regency was powered by a 3.8 L 3800 Series II V6 engine rated at 205 hp and a 3.8 L supercharged Series II V6 engine producing 240 horsepower. Both engines sent power through the 4-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels.

Oldsmobile Regency Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Though following many features of Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, which is a model that has been given up, Oldsmobile Regency also had its downsides. Therefore, if you also have a Regency now, which is not a young one, you are supposed to learn about how to diagnose and solve these common problems on it as soon as possible:
First, the illuminated Check Engine Light always frightens the Oldsmobile Regency drivers since they worry about the consequences could be fatal this issue brings about. In fact, if you do not handle it with care, your Regency will truly break down prematurely. The best solution is to diagnose and solve it based on these symptoms. First of all, there will be strange sounds from the engine such as squealing, whining or rattling; then the engine runs roughly, misfires, stalls and even suffers from starting issues. Before it fails completely, it may have slow acceleration response and bad gas mileage. And once the Check Engine Light is activated, you had better inspect the Regency fuel pump, oil filter, drive belt, air filter, engine mount and throttle cable in a minute.
Second, another serious and common problem on Oldsmobile Regency is the transmission failure. The worse situation is that most Regency drivers have no clue about this issue, especially for those who have no knowledge background about working principle of automobiles. Some even think the clunking and grinding noises coming from underneath the vehicle while turning is caused by rocks on the road. They only realize the seriousness of this issue when the shifting gear becomes difficult, transmission fluids leaks on the ground, the indicator does not match the gear and the vehicle starts in another gear or does not go into gear at all. All these could lead to fatal accidents under certain circumstances, you had better keep the Regency shift cable, transfer case seal, transmission assembly, clutch fork and automatic transmission filter.
The best way to keep your Oldsmobile Regency at the prime condition all the time is to pay more attention to and perform routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts of it. Some auto parts are bound to wear and tear easily due to fragile materials and harsh working conditions. For example, windshield wiper and wiper blade are supposed to replace once half a year. And headlight, fog light, seat belt, antenna and cabin air filter should be put on your routine maintenance list as well if you want to enjoy a safe and comfortable driving trip brought by your Regency.
