About Oldsmobile Achieva

Developing under the background that the N-body platform needs a redesign, Oldsmobile Achieva was produced by an American multinational corporation General Motors Company's brand Oldsmobile between 1991 and 1997 as a compact car. Originally introduced to replace the Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais, Achieva was built based on the new GM N-body platform, sharing with the Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. It did well in motorsport filed and won the touring car championship of the SCCA World Challenge from 1992 to 1994. But still after being manufactured for about six years, Achieva ended production on December 4, 1997, and it was replaced by the Oldsmobile Alero for the 1999 model year.
Oldsmobile Achieva made its debut at the 1991 Chicago Auto Show as a concept car and its production started officially for the 1992 model year. It was offered in two body styles: 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan and Achieva came in four different trim levels: S, SC, SL, and SCX, of which the latter was a high-performance version of the SC. And the SCX W41 coupe introduced in 1991 and offered through 1993 was the replacement for the Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 442 W41 as the best handling, highest output compact car in the Oldsmobile's lineup. During its lifetime, Oldsmobile Achieva was powered by 2.3 L L40 4-cylinder rated at 115 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque, 2.3 L Quad-4 cranking out 115-190 horsepower and 150-160 pound-feet of torque, 3.3 L, 3.1 L V6 generating 160 hp and 185 pound-feet of torque and 2.4 L I4 making 150 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. And these engines sent power through the 3-speed, 4-speed automatic and 4-speed manual transmissions to the front wheels.

Oldsmobile Achieva Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Quite appropriate as a family car for buyers who have a medium family and have the need for commuting, Oldsmobile Achieva is a great option for them. But taking its age into account, you know it is high time that these common problems will find your Achieva:
First, engine problem again ranks first among all problems on your Oldsmobile Achieva, which is not strange if your vehicle is on the verge of breaking down. But if it appears prematurely, then these recognizable and simple symptoms of this issue collected from experienced Achieva drivers could help a lot. Generally, engine issue often starts with strange sounds such as squealing, whining or rattling from the engine, you may also see white or gray exhaust and smell burnt oil odor. Then, you will notice the engine runs roughly, misfires, stalls or even suffers from starting issues. Before the engine fails completely and dies abruptly, if you feel a loss of power while acceleration, the vehicle gulping oil and the Check Engine Light also stays on, please practice thorough inspection on the Achieva spark plug, engine mount, crankshaft pulley, drive belt, throttle cable and throttle body gasket.
Second, for Oldsmobile Achieva drivers, suspension failure is also a very tricky problem to handle with. Most Achieva owners did not attach enough importance to this issue, and as a result, it is found until fatal consequences appear. At first, you may not care about the clunking or squeaking noises from underneath the vehicle; then you could notice the tire wear becomes uneven and excessive, which is resulted from noises and could result in vehicle tilting to one side. Finally, you will find hard to handle the vehicle due to above symptoms and intense car vibration as well as a loose steering wheel. And all these could be attributed to the Achieva shock absorber, wheel bearing, sway bar bushing, control arm bushing, coil spring insulator and sway bar link.
Meanwhile, you need to perform routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts of your Oldsmobile Achieva for a safe and comfortable driving experience. Achieva windshield wiper, wiper blade, seat belt, fog light, headlight and cabin air filter should be on your routine maintenance list.
