Distributor Cap

The distributor cap is key part for the internal component as the cap has the job to protect those components. It transfers energy from the ignition coils to the engine in order to spark the fuel. And is mainly securing the rotor as the rotor has to transfer electricity to the spark plugs.

Distributor cap function

The distributor cap has a single post for each cylinder and there is a current from the ignition coil into the distributor. In some cases, engines have two spark plugs per cylinder so that two led come out of the distributor. But the two spark plugs only come in certain cars or 1980s Nissans, and Older models allow for the distributor cap to be installed incorrectly and still function properly.

Rotor operation

The rotor can be found on top of the distributor shaft, and is synchronized with the camshaft. It is pressed onto the carbon brush of the distributor which is linked to the ignition coil. The camshaft and the rotor rotate in order to fire up each spark plug at a certain time.

Common issues with a distributor cap

A faulty distributor cap can lead to engine stalls, shaking, or loud noises.
