Axle Shaft

Axle shafts are important to the vehicle since they transfer power from the differential. They are made to rotate individually so that the differential can rotate the wheels at altered speeds to increase grip.

Drive axle

A drive axle, known as a driven engine or a prime mover, is a split axle with differential and universal joints. It is split between two half axles which allows for each half axle to be connected to the wheel by a CV joint and gives free movement when making turns.

In many rear-wheel drive vehicles, the engine turns the driveshaft which generates enough force to the axle at the rear. Some vehicles have the front drive axle generating the force to drive the truck or the car.

Lift axle

A lift axle, commonly found in some dump trucks and trailers, can be controlled mechanically. Lifting an axle relieves some of the scrubbings when making tight turns. Also, many producers offer the consumer an airlift that is computer-controlled so that the axles are automatically lowered when reaching a certain limit.

Common issues with a bad axle shaft

A faulty axle shaft can lead to knocking sounds and vibration when conducting the vehicle.
