About GMC Caballero

Renamed from the GMC Sprint, GMC Caballero was produced by an American multinational corporation General Motors Company's GMC division between 1978 and 1987 as a coupe utility pickup. Originally introduced as a renamed version of Sprint, Caballero was also a GMC version of the Chevrolet El Camino and the differences between them lie on trim designations, emblems and wheel trim. "Caballero" in its name derives from the Spanish language, meaning gentleman, horseman or knight in America. But after being manufactured for about nine years, the production of Caballero was ended.
GMC Caballero made its debut in 1977 for the 1978 model year and it shared its mechanical parts with the fifth-generation Chevrolet El Camino and Chevrolet Malibu. Built based on the A-body platform from 1978 to 1981 and on the G-body from 1982 to 1987, Caballero changed its egg-crate style, horizontal bars or vertical bars to full-width grille design housing four headlights and a four-row crosshatch pattern. It came in three trim levels under Spanish names: Diablo, Laredo and Amarillo. During its lifetime, GMC Caballero was powered by 3.8 L 4.3 L V6 and 4.4 L, 5.0 L and 5.7 L V8 engines. All these engines sent power through the 3-speed automatic and 3-speed, 4-speed manual transmissions to the front wheels.

GMC Caballero Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

First, after all, GMC Caballero was built on the same platform sharing with the El Camino, it more or less also shares some problems with it as well. And engine failure is one of them. According to some experienced Caballero drivers, you can speculate correctly from some recognizable and simple symptoms if you are careful and focused enough. For example, this problem often starts with strange noises such as whining, rattling or squealing from the engine, you may also smell burnt oil odor in the compartment; then the engine will run roughly, misfire, stall or even have a difficulty in starting. Before it fails completely, a decrease in power while acceleration and fuel efficiency and lit Check Engine Light are the last signs to warn you of a thorough inspection on Caballero engine mount, air filter, oil filter, spark plug, oxygen sensor, engine control module and fuel pump.
Second, for GMC Caballero drivers, suspension failure is also a very common issue just like El Camino drivers. This issue is often misunderstood by drivers, and they often thought it only brings about an uncomfortable and unsteady driving experience only. But in fact, some experienced Caballero owners knew that though this issue starts with clunking or rattling sounds from underneath the vehicle, in a long run, poor handling because of intense car vibration, swerving or nose diving when accelerating and braking, as well as uneven tire wear and tilting vehicle, is where the dangers lurk.
