About Chevrolet Metro

Similar to Chevy Sprint, Geo Metro, and Suzuki, Chevrolet Metro was produced jointly by an American multinational corporation General Motors Company, a Japanese multinational corporation Suzuki Motor Corporation and an independently incorporated joint venture CAMI Automotive from 1998 to 2001 in the United States as a subcompact car. Originally introduced to Chevrolet Chevette, Chevrolet Sprint and Sprint Metro, Metro was the result of GM's response to the waning popularity of smaller automobiles in the North American market. But after being manufactured through only one generation, Metro was replaced by the Chevrolet Aveo.
In 1998, the Geo Metro carried Chevrolet nameplate, but it still was produced at the GM M platform as a 3-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan. It came in trim levels including base, LSi and GT. Featured optional anti-lock brakes, safety cage construction with deformable front and rear crush zones and five structural crossbars engineered to spread side impact loads throughout the car's structure, steel side impact door safety beams and daytime running lights, Chevrolet Metro was powered by a 1.0 L inline 3-cylinder gasoline engine and a 1.3 L SOHC inline 4-cylinder engine and engines sent power through 5-speed manual and 3-speed automatic transmissions to the front wheels. The last Metro rolled off the assembly on April 26, 2001.

Chevrolet Metro Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

As the joint result of three brilliant and exceptional automobile manufacturers, Chevy Metro had absorbed all advantages from them. But still, as time passes by, Metro could not withstand the natural beat and result in these common problems:
First, starting issues including hard starting and inability to start as well as the braking failure are the worst problems for Chevrolet Metro drivers. As engine failure often indicates the vehicle is on the verge of breaking down and braking failure means the driving is on the verge of danger. Therefore, some Metro drivers are kind to provide some signs to help you diagnose and solve them as soon as possible. At first, there will be knocking, ticking or clanking sounds coming from the engine, then you will find leaking oil or coolant, white smoke, bubbles and white milky oil; gradually, the engine will run roughly, misfire, stall and even have starting issues. And decreased engine performance causes loss of power in acceleration and fuel economy and illuminated Check Engine Light are all signs of the necessity of inspecting Metro timing cover, exhaust manifold, rocker am, EGR filter, EGR valve and head gasket. And braking failure often results from the Metro brake proportioning valve.
Second, issues on suspension, transmission and steering systems are very annoying for Chevrolet Metro drivers as they often arise together. Suspension failure brings about abnormal tire wear, grinding or roaring noises, excessive vibration, unintentionally steering and poor handling, which could be attributed to Metro wheel bearing and control arm; transmission failure often causes the indicator not matching the gear, the vehicle not turning off and starting in another gear or not going into gear at all, Metro shift cable is the reason; and steering failure results in difficulty steering, leaking power steering fluid and low fluid levels, the Metro power steering hose should take the responsibility for this failure.
It is certain that it is not that easy to keep the Chevrolet Metro at the prime condition all the time as some auto parts of it are bound to be more vulnerable than others due to fragile materials and harsh working environment, which means routine maintenance on these parts is desperately needed. In your Metro, the rocker shaft spring kit and clutch cable are consuming products and they need to be maintained regularly. Other parts such as windshield wiper, wiper blade, seat belt, cabin air filter, fog light, headlight, antenna and so on are vital in making sure driving safe and comfortable, thus, performing routine maintenance on them is also essential.
