About Buick Electra

Born into the Buick lineup as the flagship vehicle, Buick Electra was produced by an American multinational corporation General Motors Company's Buick Motor Division from 1959 to 1990 as a full-size luxury car. Originally introduced as the successor of Buick Roadmaster and Buick Super, Electra was offered in varying body styles including coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon. But it was out of production at the end of the 1990 model year and was replaced by the Buick Park Avenue since 1991 after being manufactured through six generations.
The more recent Buick Electra was produced from 1985 to 1990 at the C-body platform as a redesigned downsized 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe. It went on sale in April 1984 as a 1985 model and came in trim levels including 300/380/430 (based on engine displacement), Park Avenue, and performance-oriented T-Type as well as Limited and top-level Park Avenue Ultra. During this generation, Buick Electra was initially powered by a carbureted 3.0 L V6 rated at 110 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, a fuel injected 3.8 L V8 and a 4.3 L Oldsmobile V6 diesel engine and these engines sent power through a 4-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels.

Buick Electra Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

As a long-running model, Buick Electra is a very reliable and popular car for family use. But since it is not a young model anymore, you had better be prepared for these common problems on your Electra:
First, for any driver, including Buick Electra drivers, engine failure is the worst and trickiest issue. As once it arises, people will know the vehicle is on the verge of breaking down, therefore, you have to attach enough importance to it. Some Electra drivers with car repair experience offered some symptoms to help green hands diagnose and solve this issue as early as possible. Initially, the engine will give out noises, and you may smell burnt oil in the compartment. Gradually, the engine starts to run roughly and suffers from misfiring, stalling, even hard starting or inability to start. Before the engine loses power while acceleration and has bad gas mileage, the Check Engine Light will come on to remind you of inspection on Electra spark plug, air filter, oil filter, drive belt, rocker arm and oxygen sensor.
Second, braking failure is another issue that Buick Electra drivers feel hard to deal with though they have paid enough attention to it. But since the braking system often decides if the drivers could reach the destination safely or not, so, the best way is to diagnose and solve it before it is too late. Some Electra drivers said after a while of driving, the brakes would be noisy and poorly responded, and the brake pedal is pulsating when being employed. And the parking brake cable could not hold the vehicle properly and the rear brakes will be locked up, especially on the wet surfaces. Once the Brake Warning Light and Parking Brake Light are triggered, please inspect if the Electra brake pad, brake disc, brake drum, brake proportioning valve and parking brake cable are out of order.
In fact, depending on above-mentioned solutions is not enough for you to have a safe and comfortable driving experience on your Buick Electra. You had better perform routine maintenance on some vulnerable auto parts of your Electra to prevent any unexpected horrible accidents from happening. For example, Electra power window switch, seat switch, window regulator, headlight switch, A/C switch and back up light switch should be maintained routinely due to a high frequency of usage. You had better put headlight, fog light, seat belt, windshield wiper, wiper blade and cabin air filter on routine maintenance list as well if you want to enjoy a completely safe and comfortable driving experience.
