About Buick Century

Appearing for almost half a century as a nameplate, Buick Century was produced by an American multinational corporation General Motors Company and sold under its brand Buick from 1936 to 1942, from 1954 to 1958 and from 1973 to 2005 as a mid-size car. Originally introduced to replace the Buick Master Six, Century was Buick's first automobile capable of reaching a speed of 100 mph. However, after being manufactured through six generations, Buick Century was eventually replaced by Buick LaCrosse in the 2005 model year.
The fifth-generation Buick Century was made from 1982 to 1996 with a significant midlife refreshing in 1989. It was available in sedan, wagon and coupe body styles and came in trim levels including Custom, Limited and Special. During this generation, Century was powered by a 2.2 L I4 rated at 110-120 hp and 130 lb-ft of torque, 2.5 L I4 producing 90-110 hp and 134-135 lb-ft of torque, 2.8 L, 3.0 L, 3.1 L, 3.8 L and 4.3 L V6 engines. And power was sent through the 3-speed and 4-speed automatic transmissions to the front wheels. The most recent Century arrived in 1997 as a 4-door sedan. It was offered in Custom and Limited trim levels but only one engine. From 1997 to 1999, Century was powered by a 3.1 L V6 rated at 160 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque but was upgraded to 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque in 2000. But it sent power through the 4-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels all the time.

Buick Century Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Though Buick Century is a comfortable car with a very good reliability record, it has a floaty suspension, unresponsive handling and so-so brakes, therefore, you had better be prepared for these common problems on your Century:
First, for Buick Century drivers, transmission slipping becomes the biggest headache and even ranks first among all other problems according to the car repair statistics site CarComplaints.com. Most Century owners complained that when the vehicle reaches about 78,500 miles, the transmission failure will start to pop up. And they have met symptoms such as the indicator not matching the gear, the key could not be removed from the ignition to turn the vehicle off and the vehicle starts in another gear or refuses to go into any gear. Some also said this problem even triggered the Check Engine Light. If you also notice these symptoms, please inspect if the Century shift cable and automatic transmission shifter are working properly in time.
Second, braking failure is also a serious and common problem in Buick Century. Every driver knows that a well-functioning braking system is the guarantee of a safe driving. However, some Century owners complained that after a while of driving, the brakes will become noisy and poorly responded, the brake pedal also becomes unresponsive, and sometimes the brakes are locked up and the parking brake cable could not hold the vehicle properly. Therefore, once you see the lit ABS Light and Parking Brake Light, please inspect the ABS control module and parking brake cable immediately.
However, it is not easy to keep the Buick Century at the prime condition consistently as there are so many different kinds of auto parts of it. Among those, some are more vulnerable and easier to wear and tear due to fragile materials and harsh working conditions, routine maintenance on them is the key to keep them vitalized. For example, electrical parts are exposed to a high frequency of usage, they should be maintained on a regular basis.
